LOS ANGELES — Digital shows increasingly should have multi-tiered international release strategies, said David Tochterman, a digital agent with Innovative Artists who sat down with Beet.TV at NATPE LA TV Fest. He pointed to Crackle’s recently released show “Urban Wolf” that is rolling out episode by episode in the United States and via DVD in international markets. That’s a model he expects will become the norm with digital projects for big studios like Sony, Paramount and Warner Brothers. Branded entertainment is also a vital business model for Web shows and Tochterman has been involved in the popular Ikea-led Web show “Easy to Assemble.” He discussed how to measure online success with us in this interview. A new wave of content from Hollywood is explored in today’s New York Times by Brooks Barnes. Find this video at www.beet.tv

Hiring An Announcer Top Ten Tips

Posted on July 23, 2010
Filed Under Video Production | Leave a Comment

Do you need a voiceover pro? Odds are you found out that hiring your uncle to do the company outgoing message isn’t the best strategy. Mind you, I’m sure he has a very nice timbre. But in voiceover, how to use it is the key.

Indeed, there are hundreds of thousands of people on the internet who want to sell you their voice. Out of that number, maybe about a thousand can actually deliver the goods on a par with Madison Avenue. The art of performing voiceover is not that simple!

Hiring voice over #1: Voice Mail Let’s start simple. A voice over pro will know how to set the right pace and feel for your IVR, on-hold and voicemail greetings. It needs to reflect the feel of your small business, be understandable and, most importantly, engaging. Having one of your staff do it will work on a perfunctory level, but it won’t elevate you to the same level or higher than your competitors.

Hiring voice over #2: Internet Presentations Many times small businesses will let whoever their IT guy is do any voice over required for multimedia projects. Sometimes because they forget that Hollywood level voice over talent is available online. Sometimes they think the price is too high. Well, you can have a VO announcer for a competitive rate quite easily.

Hiring voice over #3: Radio Advertisements Many small businesses think that having the owner just “talk to the people” will give off a down home feel. Unless said small business owner is Sam Sheppard, it’ll have quite a different effect – the listener tunes out. And in small markets the air waves are full of amateur voice overs. Hire a voice over pro and you have just graduated elevated your small business to the pros.

Hiring voiceover #4: Television Spots Okay. Your company has just pulled together a budget for their first television spot. Good times! Ah, but wait… There isn’t an entry for voiceover in the budget! And, unless you specifically know you will not need a voiceover, you better put it in the budget. Nothing can dilute a tv spot quicker than a bad, amateurish voiceover! Hire a voiceover professional!

Hiring voice over #5: Narration Long narration is the hardest and tedious voice over there is. To have an amateur talk for ten minutes is just plain wrong! Hire a voice over pro. They are trained to speak in a way that captures and holds the listener’s attention. And don’t worry, rates for narration can sometimes be cheaper per word than broadcast commercials.

Hiring Voice Over #6: Imaging/Promos If you happen to be someone who works in the niche category, such as radio imaging or TV promos, then hiring a voiceover pro is a no-brainer. But, just in case you’re reading this and needed the reminder – here it is! (And no offense meant regarding that “no brainer” comment.)

Hiring voiceover #7: Recording Studio Another big perk to hiring a voiceover pro online is that you don’t have to pay for a recording studio. That alone cuts your costs in half! You now can get a Hollywood level voiceover, performed on state-of-the-art sound recording equipment, delivered right to your email! Not a bad deal.

Hiring Voice Over #8: Copywriting Sometimes you may need the help of a writer to flesh out your script – or just create it from the start. You could look online for a freelance copywriter, but you’ll see millions – literally! But a good voice over artist will have the name, number and website of a trusted copywriter. That right there will save you hours or even days of trial and error. However, be careful with voice over talent who also offer copywriting services. If they have the time to write all their client’s scripts in addition to recording the voice over, then they aren’t fully focused on the task at hand… And there may also be a reason they have enough time to do all those things.

Hiring voice over #9: Advertising Agency If you’re working with a 24 hour deadline or have a limited budget, then you just need to go directly to the horse’s mouth, er voice over talent’s website. You don’t have to spend thousands of dollars going through an advertising agency.

Hiring Voice Over #10: Voice Over Sizzle But arguably the best part of hiring a voice over professional is the sizzle cachet they come with.

When you want to hire voice over actor, listen to the demos of Hollywood voice over announcer at My Voice Over Guy!
