Noisy Coworkers: Survive Office Noise

by Frank Barnett

The rapport in your workplace has significant effects upon your daily functioning. Your relationship with your colleagues can make or break your day's efforts and is also one important factor that affects whether you are professionally successful in the long term. Difficult times at work often translate to moodiness and irritability at home as well and can have deleterious effects on your personal life too.

With this being the case, there are a variety of distractions that can interfere with a good working mentality for both yourself and coworkers. For example, noisy coworkers, can actually limit the effectiveness of the office working environment for you and other coworkers. It can be extremely difficult to concentrate on your work when you have noisy, obnoxious people around you, but there are ways to make the situation better.

Dealing with a noisy work environment is difficult, since, in addition to noisy coworkers, you may also have to contend with general office noise. You can try asking noisy coworkers to quiet down a bit, though this may not always be possible. Some--or all--of them might take offense, which you would want to avoid, given that you have to work with them every day. Besides, their noisiness may be a result of their job duties, in which case asking for quietness won't work.

If you are working on an important project, particularly one that is time dependent, even small noises such as the stapler or the fax machine can begin to wear you thin. It is important to learn to deal with these problems to benefit yourself and those around you.

For example, if you find yourself in a noisy office, you can always attempt to move to some area which has significantly less noise. Of course, that is not invariably feasible. You can keep an eye out for a preferable site that may be about to be vacated by a colleague who is moving up in the company. Additionally, if it is permitted, you might want to use a headset and a media player loaded with gentle melodies. Another alternative is to put sound-dampening ear plugs in your ears.

It is important to remember to always be polite, but this in no way mean that you should not let coworkers know when they do something that bothers you in some way. They may not even realize that what they are doing is disturbing those around them, so it is only fair to give them the opportunity to make amends with people. Keeping things to yourself may build up to a point where you can no longer hold back, resulting in you saying or doing something you will later regret.

This article discusses how the environment where you work can affect your professional and home life. One aspect of your job that can be a problem are noisy coworkers and general office noise. The article suggests that one cannot be rude in these situations, but that there are ways to try to deal with this problem. One suggestion was to see if a person could move his desk and another solution to a noisy office was to play soothing music to counteract the noise. Lastly, the article suggests that you talk to your co-workers and give them the chance to be quieter.
